Fishing Information

The fishing at Cayo Largo is restricted in 6 fly only sections. The lodge has only 6 boats available with a maximum of 12 persons per week. Each sector is quite large that it can easily fit six boats in each section! The rule is that you will fish every day one different sector. The fishing is superb at Cayo Largo and it is really some of the best you ever may have experienced.

Section 6 is a special Tarpon area, but in fact you can find Tarpon in all sectors. Bonefish, you can catch many fish between 6 – 8 pound and don’t be surprised if you meet your next record overhere. Jack Crevalle can be found in the deeper flats, especially around Punta del Este, section 1, but also on other deeper flats. On many occasions they cruise around with Permit and can be found on each sector between 8 – 25 pounds. Cayo Largo is the best location in the world for finding big permit on the backs of rays and the guides are experts in reading the water and tides in order to find this unique phenomenon, so if you are dreaming of landing a big permit, Cayo Largo is the destination of choice. Barracudas are everywhere. At Cayo Largo you have very good opportunities to catch a nice size Tarpon, a record Bonefish, huge Permit and Jack Crevalle, large Snook, big Barracuda and other toothy creatures. Every day you have the opportunity to catch a grand slam.

Skiffs

Cayo Largo is equipped with excellent flat boats, suitable for all conditions. The guides are very experienced fly fishermen and they speak English. The guides of Cayo Largo prepare your rods on the first day. After the fishing they check your knots on every day and clean you rod. You don’t need to bring your fishing gear back to the hotel. They will take care of everything and store your gear in their clubhouse.

Seasons

The period January to March brings with it the risk of cold fronts from the north-east. The fishing at this time is good, particularly for good-sized bonefish, small and medium tarpon (20-30 lbs), and from mid-January the permit begins to appear. The period April to June is perhaps the best time both for weather and for the appearance of large quantities of huge tarpon – in addition to the bonefish and permit. July and August the fishing is the same, but hotter sometimes. September to December is a good period for bonefish and for smaller quantities of large and medium tarpon.
